Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
